Guerra ctd

in exploring the reasons that led to the emergence of a progressive Catholicism/ CEBs suggests:

(1) loss of close links with the state; especially after the military coup

(2) competition from evangelicals and afro-Brazilian religions

(3) competition from alternative, secularized left-wing programmes

(4) externally Vatican II and then the preferential option for the poor

(5) pressure from civil society

CEBs weakened by secularised and rational discourse; minimizing the mystical elements and the individual needs of people.

Poor opted for the Pentecostals1
